Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2026: Complete Guide, History, Trek Route & Detailed Itinerary
Hemkund Sahib is one of the most sacred and high-altitude pilgrimage destinations in India, located at an elevation of approximately 4,329 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by seven snow-covered peaks and a crystal-clear glacial lake, this divine place is known for its unmatched spiritual atmosphere and breathtaking natural beauty.
Every year, thousands of pilgrims, trekkers, and nature lovers visit Hemkund Sahib not only for religious purposes but also to experience the peace and purity of the Himalayas. The journey to Hemkund Sahib is not just a trip—it is a combination of devotion, endurance, and self-discovery.
Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2026 Opening & Closing Dates
For 2026, the Hemkund Sahib Yatra is expected to begin in the last week of May 2026, most likely between 23rd to 25th May 2026, depending on weather conditions and snow clearance.
The Yatra generally continues until early October 2026 (around 10 October), after which the region becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
Since Hemkund Sahib is located at a very high altitude, the opening dates may slightly vary each year based on climatic conditions. Therefore, it is always advisable to check official updates before planning your journey.
History of Hemkund Sahib
The history of Hemkund Sahib is deeply rooted in Sikh spirituality and is associated with Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. In the sacred scripture Dasam Granth, Guru Gobind Singh Ji mentions a place called “Hemkunt Parbat”, where he meditated in a previous life surrounded by seven snow-covered mountains.
For many years, this location remained unknown in the physical world. In the early 20th century, a Sikh soldier named Sant Sohan Singh Ji took inspiration from these scriptures and began searching for this sacred place. With determination and help from local villagers, the site was finally discovered in the 1930s.
After its discovery, a small shrine was established near the glacial lake, which later developed into the present-day Gurudwara. Over time, Hemkund Sahib became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Sikhism.
The place symbolizes meditation, spiritual awakening, and devotion, making it a deeply meaningful destination for visitors.
