What is Kedarnath Yatra? Why is it So Special?
Kedarnath Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage to Kedarnath Temple, one of the Panch Kedar shrines and an essential part of the famous Char Dham Yatra circuit. The current temple structure is believed to have been built by Adi Shankaracharya approximately 1,200 years ago. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his “hump” (prishtha bhag) form considered the most powerful of the Panch Kedar manifestations.
The Kedarnath Yatra is not just a physical journey it is a deeply spiritual experience. Pilgrims walk through breathtaking Himalayan terrain, crossing rivers, mountain passes, and scenic meadows to reach one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. The darshan of Baba Kedarnath is believed to liberate devotees from the cycle of birth and death.
Kedarnath temple remains closed during harsh winter months due to heavy snowfall. The 2026 yatra season begins on 22 April 2026, with the idol being carried from Ukhimath (Omkareshwar Temple) back to Kedarnath in a grand procession.

Essential Tips for Kedarnath Yatra 2026
Follow these important tips for a safe, smooth, and spiritually fulfilling Kedarnath Yatra 2026.
Consult your doctor before the yatra. High altitude of 3,583 metres can affect people with heart disease, blood pressure, asthma, or breathing issues. Senior citizens above 60 may need a medical fitness certificate.
Yatra 2026 registration started on 6 March 2026. Daily pilgrim caps apply. Over 1.26 lakh registrations were done on Day 1 itself. Register well in advance to secure your preferred travel date.
Temperature near the temple can drop to 2°C even in May. Carry a warm jacket, gloves, muffler, comfortable trekking shoes, rain poncho, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
Drink water regularly during the trek. Avoid heavy meals before starting. If you experience altitude sickness symptoms like headache, nausea, or dizziness — descend immediately.
May and June are peak months. Camps, guesthouses, and hotels near Kedarnath fill up weeks in advance. Book at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead to avoid disappointment.
ATM and card payment facilities are very limited near Gaurikund and Kedarnath. Keep sufficient cash for trek services, food, and emergencies throughout the route.
Always keep your government-issued photo ID and Yatra registration e-Pass ready for checkpoints at Sonprayag and Gaurikund. Carry both digital and printed copies.
July–August brings heavy rainfall, landslides, and road closures. Helicopter services get frequently cancelled. Unless your plans are highly flexible, avoid these months entirely.
Important reminder: Kedarnath Yatra involves high altitude trekking in challenging conditions. Always inform your family about your travel plans, carry emergency contact numbers, and do not trek alone if you are a first-time visitor.
